Saint Francis Drops opener to Dayton 18-10, misses opportunities for win
The Saint Francis Red Flash opened their 2024 season with a narrow 18-10 loss to the Dayton Flyers. In a game marked by defensive battles and missed opportunities, the Red Flash showed resilience but ultimately fell short. Despite the loss, there were bright spots, including a strong rushing performance and a key defensive play that set up their only touchdown. As Saint Francis prepares for the NEC schedule, this game offers lessons and areas for improvement.
The game started with Dayton quickly taking the lead. Quarterback Drew VanVleet connected with Gavin Lochow for a 12-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter, putting the Flyers ahead 7-0. The Red Flash's struggles began shortly after, when a well-placed Dayton punt pinned them at their own one-yard line. On the very next play, the Flyers’ defense capitalized, tackling Saint Francis in the end zone for a safety, extending Dayton’s lead to 9-0.
The second quarter was a defensive struggle, with neither team able to find the end zone. However, Saint Francis managed to get on the board with a 26-yard field goal by Mac Plummer at the 6:25 mark. This brought the score to 9-3, and the Red Flash entered halftime with some momentum, despite trailing.
The third quarter saw more action, beginning with Dayton extending their lead. The Flyers executed a trick play, resulting in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Lochow, pushing the score to 15-3 after a failed two-point conversion.
Saint Francis responded with a crucial defensive play when linebacker Tangelo forced a fumble deep in Dayton territory. The Red Flash capitalized on this opportunity with a 1-yard touchdown run by Markell Holman, narrowing the gap to 15-10 with 5:24 left in the third quarter.
As the third quarter wound down, Dayton added a 44-yard field goal, stretching their lead to 18-10 with just seven seconds remaining in the quarter. This proved to be the final score of the game, as both defenses tightened up in the fourth quarter.
Saint Francis had a golden opportunity to close the gap early in the fourth quarter. They drove the ball down to Dayton's five-yard line, but a costly fumble on third down ended the drive, with Dayton recovering the ball. The Red Flash were unable to score for the remainder of the game, allowing Dayton to secure the 18-10 victory.
Despite the loss, there were notable performances from Saint Francis players:
- Nick Whitfield Jr. (QB): Whitfield completed 15 of 26 passes for 121 yards. While he didn't find the end zone, his leadership in driving the team down the field, particularly in the second half, was evident.
- DeMarcus McElroy (RB): McElroy led the rushing attack with 69 yards on 9 carries, averaging an impressive 7.7 yards per carry. His 28-yard run was the longest for Saint Francis and demonstrated his explosiveness.
- Gavin Thomson (WR): Thomson was the top target for Whitfield, making 3 catches for 44 yards, including a crucial 29-yard reception.
The Red Flash showed flashes of potential against Dayton, particularly on the defensive side of the ball and in their running game. However, missed opportunities and turnovers proved costly. As Saint Francis prepares for NEC play, focusing on ball security and capitalizing on scoring chances will be crucial. The performance of players like McElroy and Thomson suggests that the Red Flash have the talent to compete strongly in their conference.
Saint Francis’ season opener against Dayton ended in a tough 18-10 loss, but the game provided valuable lessons and highlighted areas for improvement. With solid performances from key players and a strong defensive effort, the Red Flash have a foundation to build on as they head into NEC play. Fans can look forward to a team that, with some adjustments, has the potential to make a significant impact in the conference this season.
Saint Francis is back in action on 9/7 at Kent State, who is 0-1 following a drubbing from Pittsburgh.
Wagner Seahawks Dominate Virginia Lynchburg 46-7 in Season Opener
The Wagner Seahawks kicked off their 2024 season with a commanding 46-7 victory over Virginia Lynchburg, marking their first season-opening win since 2018. Quarterbacks Jake Cady and Damien Mazil combined for four touchdown passes, while the Seahawks' defense stifled the Dragons, limiting them to just one score. Though Virginia Lynchburg is not an NCAA-affiliated school, the win still showcased Wagner's potential as they look ahead to NEC competition.
Wagner wasted no time establishing dominance, scoring on their second play from scrimmage. Running back Rickey Spruill capped off an 86-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run, giving Wagner an early 7-0 lead. The Seahawks continued to apply pressure, with quarterback Damien Mazil connecting with Jaylen Bonelli on a 20-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter, extending the lead to 14-0.
Wagner’s defense also made its presence felt, forcing a safety and adding a field goal to end the first quarter with a 19-0 lead. The Seahawks' strong start set the tone for the rest of the game.
Virginia Lynchburg managed to respond early in the second quarter with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Jenks to Micah Gantt, closing the gap to 19-7. However, this would be their only score of the game, as Wagner quickly regained control.
Taking over at quarterback, Jake Cady led Wagner on two consecutive scoring drives. The first was a 95-yard march that ended with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Bonelli, who had an outstanding game. The second drive was shorter, with Cady connecting with Sekou Kamau from 4 yards out to extend Wagner’s lead to 32-7 at halftime.
Wagner continued to dominate in the third quarter. Cady connected with Teree McDonald on a 32-yard touchdown pass, making the score 39-7. The Seahawks added another touchdown later in the quarter when Julio Tatis punched it in from 2 yards out, capping a 32-yard drive and bringing the final score to 46-7.
Several Seahawks stood out in this decisive win:
- Jake Cady (QB): Cady completed 4 of 8 passes for 101 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing his efficiency and ability to lead scoring drives.
- Damien Mazil (QB): Mazil was also effective, completing 5 of 9 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown. His strong start helped set the tone for Wagner’s offense.
- Jaylen Bonelli (WR): Bonelli was the star of the game, with four catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. His performance highlighted why he was last season’s NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year. He collected four touchdown catches in 2023, and is already halfway to that mark after just one game in 2024.
While Wagner's win over Virginia Lynchburg is a positive start, it's important to note that their opponent is not an NCAA-affiliated school, raising questions about the level of competition. However, the Seahawks' dominant performance, particularly from key players like Cady, Mazil, and Bonelli, provides optimism as they prepare for NEC play.
Wagner's ability to execute on both sides of the ball suggests they could be a strong contender in the NEC this season. The offensive efficiency and defensive tenacity displayed in this opener will be crucial as they face tougher opponents in their conference schedule.
The Wagner Seahawks made a strong statement in their season opener, routing Virginia Lynchburg 46-7. With standout performances from Jake Cady, Damien Mazil, and Jaylen Bonelli, Wagner looks poised to make noise in NEC play. While the level of competition in this game might raise some questions, the Seahawks can build on this victory as they prepare for more challenging matchups ahead.
On Saturday, they’ll have just that as they head into the Patriot League to take on Lehigh in out of conference, Northeast Region play. The Patriot League operates in a very similar region to the NEC, but does allot 20 more scholarships for football. To win, Wagner will have to carry their momentum forward from their win against VUL.

- Ludovick Choquette (RB): Choquette rushed for 128 yards on 15 carries, averaging 8.5 yards per carry, and added a receiving touchdown. His dual-threat ability makes him a cornerstone of the Sharks' offense.
-Michael Love (WR): Love led the receiving corps with six catches for 69 yards, including a crucial touchdown before halftime. His consistent play makes him a key target for Stanzani.
Despite the close loss, LIU’s performance against UAlbany offers plenty of optimism as they head into NEC play. With strong contributions from Stanzani, Choquette, and Love, the Sharks have the talent and determination to be a formidable contender in their conference. The lessons learned from this opener will be invaluable as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

Robert Morris Falls to Utah State 36-14 in Season Opener
In their season opener, the Robert Morris Colonials faced off against the Utah State Aggies, ultimately falling 36-14. Despite the loss, the Colonials demonstrated moments of brilliance that suggest they could be a formidable force in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. This article recaps the key moments, including a stunning interception and solid performances that bode well for the rest of the season.
The game kicked off with Utah State, donning unique cow-themed helmets that were a hit among their fans, taking an early lead. Spencer Petras connected with Kyrese White for a 57-yard touchdown pass, but Petras struggled overall as the starter. Robert Morris' defense managed to contain the Aggies for much of the first quarter, allowing just one score.
In the second quarter, Robert Morris found its rhythm. Quarterback Anthony Chiccitt led a 75-yard drive, culminating in a beautiful 40-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cole Mitchell, tying the game at 7-7. This drive showcased the Colonials' potential to compete at a high level, particularly within NEC play.
One of the game’s defining moments came just before halftime. Defensive back Rob Carter made an acrobatic, one-handed interception, one of the greatest in the history of the sport. This play stopped Utah State from reclaiming the lead and showcased the kind of defensive talent that could dominate in NEC competition.
Capitalizing on Carter’s interception, Robert Morris mounted a quick drive that ended with a 31-yard touchdown run by Delvecchio Powell II. Powell's run was a testament to his power and agility, and it gave the Colonials a 14-10 lead with just 41 seconds left in the half. Heading into the locker room with the lead was a significant confidence booster for the team.
The third quarter saw Utah State adjusting to Robert Morris' defense. Although the Colonials forced a three-and-out on Utah State’s first possession, a critical 53-yard touchdown catch by Kyrese White shifted the momentum back to the Aggies, who took a 17-14 lead. This swing in momentum highlighted the challenges Robert Morris might face against high-powered offenses but also underscored their ability to compete with top teams.
As the game progressed into the fourth quarter, Utah State's backup quarterback, Bryson Barnes, who replaced the ineffective Petras, began to take control. His 63-yard touchdown run extended Utah State’s lead to 26-14. Despite Robert Morris' efforts, the Aggies added another touchdown and a field goal, closing out the game with a 36-14 win.
Several Robert Morris players had standout performances that suggest the team will be a serious contender in NEC play:
- Rob Carter: His incredible one-handed interception was a game-changing moment and highlighted his elite defensive skills.
- Anthony Chiccitt: Completed 22 of 30 passes for 171 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Chiccitt showed strong leadership, especially in the first half.
- Zach Tanner: As the secondary quarterback, Tanner completed 6 of 8 passes for 42 yards, providing reliable support in the passing game.
- Tyvon Edmonds Jr.: Rushed for 86 yards on 19 carries, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Edmonds’ ground game will be a crucial asset as the Colonials move into NEC play.
While the outcome against Utah State was not in Robert Morris' favor, the game provided valuable insights into the team's capabilities. The Colonials demonstrated resilience, defensive strength, and offensive potential that could make them a force in NEC play. With standout performers like Rob Carter and Tyvon Edmonds Jr., Robert Morris is well-positioned to compete fiercely in their conference. The lessons learned from this game, particularly in handling high-pressure situations, will be invaluable as they move forward.
Although Robert Morris fell short against Utah State, the Colonials’ performance highlighted their potential to be a serious contender in the NEC. The unforgettable interception by Rob Carter and the strong showing by Tyvon Edmonds Jr. are just the beginning of what could be a successful season. Fans can look forward to a team that, despite early setbacks, has the talent and determination to make a significant impact in conference play.

Mercyhurst Secures Inaugural Division I Victory with a 28-25 Win Over Wheeling
In a thrilling debut as a Division I team, the Mercyhurst Lakers triumphed over the Wheeling Cardinals with a 28-25 victory on Thursday night. The game marked a significant milestone for Mercyhurst as they stepped up to compete at the Division I level, and they did not disappoint.
Adam Urena, Mercyhurst’s star quarterback, led the charge with an impressive performance, throwing for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Urena, who tallied 23 touchdown passes last season, picked up right where he left off, completing 21 of 31 passes and showcasing his ability to lead the Lakers’ offense.
Urena's primary target for the night was Cameron Barmore, who caught two of Urena’s touchdown passes. Barmore, a seasoned receiver, had seven catches for 101 yards, pushing his career total to over 1,500 receiving yards on 100 catches. His reliable hands and sharp route running were pivotal in securing the Lakers' win.

The Cardinals managed to take a brief lead again with a 37-yard field goal by Joao Lima early in the second quarter, but Urena and the Lakers answered back with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Barmore.
The game’s momentum shifted in the third quarter when Urena found Barmore for another touchdown, this time a 4-yard pass that extended Mercyhurst’s lead to 28-17. This touchdown proved crucial as it gave the Lakers a comfortable lead heading into the final quarter.
Wheeling didn’t go down without a fight. With just 23 seconds left in the game, Davis connected with Holloway again for a 33-yard touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion run by Holloway himself. This brought the score to 28-25, giving the Cardinals a glimmer of hope. However, Mercyhurst recovered the ensuing onside kick, effectively sealing their victory.
